Who I am

I'm Huw Davies MAAT, the founder of Finstem. I've spent over nine years in accountancy, first in industry finance roles, then in practice, and I built Finstem because I saw how little value most businesses were getting from their accountant.

Why I started Finstem

Early in my career, I spent years in industry finance — sitting on the client side, waiting for accountants to deliver work that was late, generic, or both. I watched business owners pay thousands a year to firms that would file the paperwork, send an invoice, and disappear until the next year-end.

When I moved into practice, I saw the same problem from the other side. The model was broken: bill by the hour, do the minimum, avoid difficult conversations. Clients had no idea whether their business was profitable month to month. They couldn't answer basic questions like "can I afford this hire?" or "where is my margin leaking?" — because nobody was helping them look.

I started Finstem to fix that. Not with a bigger team or a fancier office, but with a fundamentally different approach: work closely with you throughout the year, give you numbers you can actually use, and quote a clear price upfront so there are never any surprises.

How I work

Finstem is deliberately lean. It's just me — and that's intentional. You'll always work with the same person who knows your business. No junior staff, no handoffs, no explaining the same thing twice.

Everything is digital: cloud accounting software, video calls, secure document sharing, WhatsApp for quick questions. I serve UK businesses exclusively and I'm available Monday to Friday 08:00–20:00, and weekends 10:00–16:00.

I work closely with clients — keeping compliance sorted, tax minimised, and giving you clear numbers you can actually make decisions from. No bloated service menu. No upselling.

What you get that other accountants don't offer

Every client gets proactive tax planning throughout the year — not a bill and a filing at year-end. You get a straight answer when you need one, usually within hours. And you always know what you're paying, no matter how many questions you ask.
