Business advisory in Oswestry.

Accountancy and tax advice on the decisions a director meets. Four of them below, each worked through with the company’s own figures before the money moves.

Buying a van

The company needs a van. The question is not whether, but how: bought outright, on hire purchase or leased, and in which accounting period.

Worked out with the director

  • What each option does to cash now and to the corporation tax computation later
  • Capital allowances on a commercial vehicle, and the period in which the claim lands
  • VAT on a commercial vehicle and its running costs, and when it can be reclaimed

Taking on the first employee

The work has outgrown one person. Before the advert goes out, the director needs the full cost of the role and whether the company can carry it through a quiet month.

Worked out with the director

  • The cost beyond the salary: employer’s National Insurance, pension auto-enrolment and holiday pay
  • Employee or subcontractor, decided on the facts of the role before the contract is written
  • PAYE registration and the payroll set up in time for the first pay day

Bringing in a second director

Someone who shares the work wants a share of the company. The question is what they get: shares, a directorship or both, and on what terms. A shareholders’ agreement is a solicitor’s document; the figures behind it are Finstem’s.

Worked out with the director

  • Shares or salary, and what a second shareholder means for dividends and for control of the company
  • The Companies House filings for the appointment and any share issue, and the PSC register kept up to date
  • Both directors’ personal tax and the company’s planned together, not one at a time

A bad quarter

Sales have dropped, or a large customer has paid late, and the tax bill is still coming. The question is how long the cash lasts and what to change first.

Worked out with the director

  • A cash forecast for the next quarter from the ledger as it stands, updated as invoices are paid
  • Which costs are fixed, which follow sales, and what a price change or a lost customer does to the margin
  • Time to Pay with HMRC discussed before a deadline passes, not after

“Always available when you need him, advice is really good. Helped my start-up business perfectly — wouldn’t have been able to do half the stuff if he wasn’t so attentive and helpful.”
