Limited Companies
& Individuals.

Finstem Accountants acts for limited companies and their directors, from Oswestry across England and Wales. One accountant for the company’s filings and the directors’ own tax.

Limited companies

The core of the practice. Statutory accounts, the CT600, VAT, payroll and the directors’ self-assessment, handled by one accountant who knows the company. Every Companies House and HMRC deadline is tracked from the start.

Typical work

  • Statutory accounts filed at Companies House
  • CT600 and the corporation tax computation filed with HMRC
  • Directors’ self-assessment prepared alongside the accounts

Switching accountant

The incumbent has been bought, gone quiet, retired, or made a mistake that cost money. One email from the director, and Finstem requests professional clearance and collects the records. Two to three weeks. The director signs the engagement letter and completes the online identity check; Finstem does the rest.

Typical work

  • Professional clearance requested from the previous accountant
  • Records collected and HMRC agent access set up
  • Any deadline inside the handover window tracked from day one

New companies

The first year is the expensive one to get wrong. Finstem handles the HMRC registrations, the first VAT decision, the year-end date and the first set of accounts. The deadlines new directors do not know they have are tracked from day one. See the first-year timeline.

Typical work

  • Corporation tax, PAYE and VAT registrations where needed
  • First accounting period and year-end date confirmed
  • A first-year calendar of every date the company now has

Contractors & consultants

One director, one company, a handful of invoices a month. Finstem keeps the books in Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, runs the payroll and files the CT600 and the personal return. Salary and dividends are reviewed before the year end, not after it.

Typical work

  • Bookkeeping, payroll and the quarterly VAT return
  • Salary and dividend mix set before the year end
  • CT600 and the personal return prepared together

Trades & construction

CIS deductions, the VAT domestic reverse charge and cash that swings with the job. Finstem runs the monthly CIS return and subcontractor verifications, and gets the reverse charge right on both sides of the invoice. The books stay current enough to show what is in the bank.

Typical work

  • Subcontractors verified and the monthly CIS return filed
  • Domestic reverse charge applied to sales and purchase invoices
  • CIS suffered set off through the monthly payroll submissions, any year-end balance reclaimed from HMRC

Haulage & transport

Vehicles on finance, fuel, drivers on payroll and thin margins. Finstem handles capital allowances on the fleet, the drivers’ payroll and VAT on fuel and vehicles. Management figures come often enough to show which work pays.

Typical work

  • Capital allowances on vehicles bought outright or on finance
  • Drivers’ payroll, RTI and pension auto-enrolment
  • VAT on fuel, commercial vehicles and repairs claimed on each return

Healthcare

Optometrists, dentists and locums trading through a company, often alongside employed income. Finstem handles the exempt and partly exempt VAT position, the personal return alongside the company, and company pension contributions.

Typical work

  • Partial exemption calculated where supplies are mixed
  • Self-assessment covering employed and company income
  • Company pension contributions timed before the year end

Veterinary

Practices, locum vets and equine or farm-animal specialists trading through a company. Drugs stock, equipment and vehicles each carry a tax consequence. Finstem takes the accounts, VAT, payroll and year-end planning off the desk.

Typical work

  • Stock counted and valued correctly at the year end
  • Capital allowances on clinical equipment and vehicles
  • Payroll for vets, nurses and locums

Professional services

Architects, agencies, consultancies and small practices trading through a company. Work in progress and staged invoicing are recognised in the right period, and the directors’ own tax is handled with the company. Management figures arrive when a decision needs them.

Typical work

  • Work in progress and staged invoices in the right period
  • Management figures before a hire, a lease or a second director
  • Directors’ self-assessment alongside the company accounts

Who Finstem
isn’t for.

Saying no early saves everyone time. Finstem says so on the first call rather than take on work it is not set up for.

  • Limited companies and their directors only
  • Bookkeeping as part of the accounts and tax work, not on its own
  • A straight answer on fit in the first call

Sole traders

Finstem does not act for sole traders. A practice that prepares sole-trader returns every day is the better fit, and Finstem will say so on the first call.

Partnerships and LLPs

The same answer. Finstem acts for limited companies, and a partnership or LLP needs a practice built around partnership tax.

Bookkeeping only

Finstem keeps the books as part of the accounts, VAT and tax work, not as a standalone service. Anyone who needs a bookkeeper and nothing else is better placed with one.

The things directors ask first.

Get in touch
Q1Do you only act for limited companies?

Yes. No sole traders, no partnerships, no LLPs. Directors’ own self-assessment returns are part of the work because they follow from the company.

Q2Does my company need to be near Oswestry?

No. Finstem is based in Oswestry and acts for companies across Shropshire, Cheshire, the West Midlands and the rest of England and Wales. Most of the work happens in Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, on the phone and on WhatsApp. Huw meets local clients in person where that helps.

Q3What does switching involve?

One email from you. Finstem requests professional clearance from the previous accountant, collects the records and sets up software and HMRC agent access. It takes two to three weeks, and any deadline in that window is tracked from the start.

“Always available when you need him, advice is really good. Helped my start-up business perfectly — wouldn’t have been able to do half the stuff if he wasn’t so attentive and helpful.”
